is a musical institution for the unrepresented, using music as protection against the fantasies of the dominating group.
Initiated by artists Joseph Marzolla and Melanie Bonajo, the duo released their first album ‘INUA’, which was recorded during the winter, in an isolated village of East Greenland. Their music and performances are inspired by places unpierced by human thoughts, speaking landscapes, isolation, songs of ghosts and animal spirits, colonialism, erosion of the ethno-spheres, extinct feelings, fear of silence, intimacy to nature and death, absence of history, tri-genderism, loss of navigation, unrevealed yet perceivable parallel universes, like the spirit of INUA. Two of their videos were selected for the Netherlands Film Festival and Melanie Bonajo’s artwork ‘Pee on Presidents’ was part of the documentary festival IDFA.

INUA is a spirit or soul that exists in all; people, animals, things (or matter), elements, lakes, mountains and plants.

Recording in East-Greenland::>

"The music originated by being in isolation of anything known. The Arctic is not an exhibition of knowing. The unraveling gradations of white in a silent landscape are monumental and impenetrable to human reason. It is a dehumanized dream where nothing has captured a place in history. Here you never stumble on something unmistakably real. Principles are fantasies from another world. The farthest point of navigation comes from the inner land. There where the spirit world is just as much part of perception as the material realm. This cosmos is ruled by no one."

The album INUA was released on tsunami-addiction in april 2013

The End of Color
3 HD channel video-installation / "10.66" / 2012
sound: Joseph Marzolla / text: Melanie Bonajo

During their stay Melanie Bonajo & Joseph Marzolla made a video which reflects on the idea that future orientated ideas are born once again by inquiring from the Earth. It contemplates on our contemporary global situation by reflecting on the past and looks for another route. The video focuses on the self-sustainability of a community in East-Greenland, their closeness with death, the domestic sphere and their rapidly changing environment. East-Greenland is one of the rare places on this planet who are still on the bridge of time. Here traditional wisdom,life-style and craft are still practiced. The place is still connected to its past, but at the same time is presented with rapid modernization processes.These places have become rare and hard to find on the planet. Mostly, because they are difficult to reach and are not of any economic interest for Western culture. Through these images social structures and belief systems are explored that appeal to human emotions in relation to their local landscape.

Z▲Z▲Z◎Z◎ curated a video essay in which they invite artists to visually contribute to the thoughts and spirit of the music.

The themes of the video run parallel to the inspirations of the album. The video essay tries to open perceptions that transcend one fixed model of reality and respects the rich and complex topography of the spirit of many cultures. The visuals embrace the creative and destructive potential of all and put to trial the separation between nature and culture. Plants, animals and humans have the same fundamental cosmic origins and are responsive to the same principles, obligated by the same duties and responsible for the collective well being of all.

The essay places perspective on the language of human emotions as the gateway to understanding our connections between all life and the world we live in. It also presents a community of artists who work with likeminded themes and reveals the connection between them.

The visual essay includes works by Ozlem Altin, Jonatah Manno, Chooc Ly Tan, Amanda Riffo, Kinga Kielczynska, Brian Mckenna, José Santos, Giorgio Poloni, Jordana Maurer, Ragnheidur Gestsdottir, Melanie Bonajo and Joseph Marzolla
